Heavy duty sand & dust control using TF-2000

TerraFirma heavy duty sand stabilisation solutions use TF-2000 polymer technology to protect roads and railways from migrating sand and the safety hazards they cause.

TF-2000 technology summary:

  • Design a berm on the side of the road / railway to be protected. (based on weather conditions, soil type, distance from road, berm height and berm slope can be calculated).
  • Stabilise the berm using TerraFirma TF-2000, to create a hard and durable crust suitable for the local weather conditions and traffic profile.
  • The crust “cures” to achieve the desired strength suitable for the local weather and the foot traffic.
  • The technology protects the road from sand accumulation on the protected road / railway / industrial site.
  • The surface will be weather resistant once TF-2000 cured.

Benefit:

  • Safety: reduced accidents and improved access and transit times as there is no rapid sand accumulation. Maintenance (sand removing) will happen away from the road / railway and not on the road / railway thus keeping traffic free-flowing and safe.
  • Cost saving: Sand removing maintenance will reduce from (in some cases) every week or two weeks to every 6 months or more depending on the weather conditions, the removal costs are lower and require fewer crews and equipment so for the same budget larger portions of the country’s infrastructure (road and rail) can be kept safe and operational.
  • Polymer road solutions using TF-5000

TerraFirma Polymer road construction solutions use TF-5000 polymer technology to provide service roads, car park areas, airstrips or helicopter pads. TF-5000 is the chosen polymer replacement for asphalt roads and sub base improvement to provide better load bearing capacity in poor soil conditions.

    TF-5000 Road construction technology:

The contractor is now able to provide quick and easy solutions to the regions challenges, especially on poor sand and low CBR (California Bearing Ratio) sub bases including:
    • Construction of all-weather roads from locally available soil (local soil assessment required) with improvement in engineering properties of the polymer stabilized road.
    • Simple easy to implement, no special equipment required, regular road compaction equipment will be used to construct the road.
    • Avoid/minimize the cost of importing material. Improved CBR ratings especially in areas with high fines content, local testing of optimum moisture content enables TF-5000 technology to be tailored to the specific project.
    • Reduction in downtime compared to traditional asphalt and cementitious solutions with comparable life expectancy (with planned maintenance).

    Benefit:

  • The TF-5000 treated soil showed an 80% CBR improvement. When tested for wet UCS values, the untreated soil generally, after soaking, had zero strength and became completely dissolved in the water bath whereas the TF-5000 treated soil resisted the degradation.
  • The surface will be water resistant once TF-5000 is cured.
  • The constructed polymer road will withstand heavy traffic use.
  • Easy to maintain – cost effective over whole life:

Life cycle cost considering initial and maintenance costs (consider minimum; minor maintenance treatments every year). The recommended maintenance schedule is dependent on the application and project; however, a typical maintenance schedule is as follows:
    • 30 days after application: Technical Inspection (application assessment).
    • 180 days after application: Maintenance Inspection (Seal Coat application if required).
    • 360 days after application: Annual Maintenance Inspection (Seal Coat Test & Recommendations)**
    • 540 days after application: Maintenance Inspection (Seal Coat application if required).
    • 720 days after application: Annual Maintenance Inspection (Seal Coat Test & Recommendations).
    • **Recommendations are made after each inspection and based on the varied traffic use and existing conditions at the time of inspection. Seal coat application is based on data specific findings to ensure the longevity of the application.
